Didascalia: Codex
Atlanticus, folio 785 b. e.
Apart from the drawing of the pile
driver, almost the entire folio is covered with plans for the altering
of the course of the Arno River and the filling of many of its bends.
This project, and the construction of the river embankments in particular,
requested the use of a pile driver (drawing on the right) as well
as some of the tools listed in the top part of the central column.
The folio may be dated between 1490 and 1499. The upper section
contains an illustration of the bends of the Arno, with the following
inscription "Sempre le volte de fiumi crescano insino che son
ringorgati i corsi veloci insino in 3 onde (the swirl of rivers
grows until the fast-flowing waters build up into three waves).
In the centre of the page, a weir on the river is shown; then there
is a drawing of a pile driver with a winch; while, in the central
column, there is a list of tools: "Seghe a acqua. Gualcherie,
Carte, Magli, Molina, Rote da coltella ..." (Water saws, paper,
rams, grinding wheel, knife grinders).
