Several of the machines that Leonardo projected to be used in yards existed before his times. During his apprentice period, working with Verrocchio, he could see and use the machines that Filippo Brunelleschi projected forty years before for building the dome of Florence cathedral. The new aspect was the theoretical background: Leonardo studies the physic laws that allowed the machines to work, in order to improve them.
