Leonardo as Artist
Art and science are two dimensions that in Leonardo it are not possible
to separate: so how he drew the ideas for his inventions from nature, so
his works of art are born by the same observation of the world which was
surrounding him.
For Leonardo art must imitate the nature reproducing its complexity and its
pulsating life through a series of technical expedients that he developed
during his life. The chiaroscuro becomes for instance one of the principal
fields of experimentation, in which Leonardo tests a technique in which the
bodies were piercing from the shades to the lights through a series degrees
which transmitted the sense of reality of the subject.
The man, according to Leonardo, is a phenomenon to be studied, and the
most perfect of all others: he studies in depth people's rites and their
physical strokes: every portrayed person in fact had to reveal his emotions
trough the expressions and the gestures. His personalities are never
completely static, but move according to pyramidal strength lines, rushes and
continuos torsion, since imaging a body or an expression in movement and ascent
is like to reveal his internal life. Leonardo left us many preparatory drawings
also for his artistic works; this proves that every masterpiece was studied with
love even in the most little details.
