The numerous machines planned by Leonardo during his life are his genius's
biggest testimonies. From engineering to mechanics, from anatomy to hydraulic:
Leonardo attends at all these fields thanks to his deep capacity of observation
of the nature and its phenomena.
It's really his acute observation and his continuos experimentation that make
Leonardo a forerunner of the modern science. The historical context in which he
lived was obviously one of the most propitious. During the florentine period,
spent in the workshop of the Verrocchio, Leonardo had way of seeing in action
cranes and machinery planned by the master and great architect Filippo
Brunelleschi; these machinery were necessary to put the big sphere made of
bronze on the top of the dome skylight of the Santa Maria del Fiore cathedral.
The news introduced by Leonardo in machinery study is the theoretical base
which was before lacking. If cranes, hoists and sluices were planned before in
an empirical way according to the customs of the time, Leonardo questions
himself on the causes and the princes who regulates the working of them. He
studies the single gears and the transformation ways of the movement: therefore
after improving the single pieces he can introduce important innovations on his
machines.
