Four-ramp stairway system
The detail reproduces a four-ramp stairway system.
Each ramp was independent from the other three and thereby proved
very useful in dividing the ascending flow of people from the descending
one. Such a stairway system proved very functional in a four-storey
(military) tower with a square base. Dividing the soldiers flow
in castles was very important, in order to allow the soldiers themselves
to move weapons faster and without problems. The use of separate
ways for different flows is in the Sforza Castle, where the dungeons
that surround the moat were divided into two different levels.
