A Dream Alfa Sports Car
The Alfa Romeo 2300 cc eight-cylinder-engined sports car, Spider Sport, was indisputably one of the most brilliant feats of 1930 engineering. The 1930's were the golden age of motor car manufacture worldwide with regard to both styling and technical specifications. Designed by one of the world's leading engineers, Vittorio Jano, this car immediately conjures up the pilot who made it world-famous, Tazio Nuvolari. It features a 2300 cc in-line eight-cylinder engine. The engine is actually made up of two four-cylinder engines with cylinders aligned in a row. The ohv layout is actuated by overhead twin camshafts driven by central gearing. The combustion chambers are hemispherical. Supercharging is by a displacement compressor of the Roots type. The maximum power is 140-175 hp at 4,000-5,400 rpm, depending on the models and on later upgrades.
In Action
Since it was first raced, it was undefeated at Grand Prix races everywhere. For years, it featured in all the gruelling endurance races, and in all the stressful speed hillclimbs. It was driven by the best-known and fearless pilots of the day, from the legendary Tazio Nuvolari and Borzacchini to Varzi and Campari to Brivio and Trossi, to name just a few. It won the major national and international competitions: the Italian Grand Prix, the "1,000 Miles", the Monaco Grand Prix, the Le Mans "24 Hours", the Spa "24 Hours", and countless more. It took the 1933 "1,000 Miles" by storm.
