Shanghai World Expo 2010

La mostra Ideal City.

Two exhibitions on Leonardo at the Shanghai World Expo 2010.

In the occasion of the Shanghai World Expo 2010 2010 the Museum was invited to the Shanghai National Museum, the most important museum of the Chinese identity, in order to supervise the section "Leonardo and the ideal city in Renaissance" together with the British Museum, the London Science Museum, the Staatliche Museen , Berlin’s Pergamon Museum, Athens’s Archaelogical Museum and other 18 Chinese museums. The Museum was the only one from Italy.
The section is part of the great exhibition Ideal City in the Urban Footprints Pavilion that had more than 4 million and a half visitors.

Moreover, in Italy’s Pavilion of the Expo, in the space dedicated to the Lombardy Region, the Museum exhibited its “Leonardo da Vinci’s Glider”.

The Expo Shanghai 2010 played a large role for the relationship of the Museum with the scientific culture and the figure of Leonardo da Vinci in the great East. The previous collaborations with Japan, South Korea and China itself, launched in the last few years, have continued and found a great success during the six months of universal exposition alongside the Huangpu river.

La mostra Ideal City.

Two were the main showcases. The Museum was involved in the first one- as the only Italian institution- in the great exhibition on the history of the city in Eastern and Western world, mounted in the thematic Pavilion “Urban Footprints”. The Museum was assigned the task to supervise the section devoted to “Leonardo and the ideal city in Renaissance”. From Milan, two interactive models and five historic models, realized during the 1950s and restored for the occasion, were shipped to China. Among others, a very interesting fact concerns the number of visitors to this pavilion: about 5 millions people visited the pavilion during six months. The second occasion of participation in the Expo, which ended last month, took place from the 17th to the 31st in Italy’s Pavilion, particularly in the space set by the Lombardy Region. The Museum gave its scientific and cultural contribution to the exhibition “The person, heart of the city: the city in the history and in the future of Lombardy”, bringing along the large-sized model of a glider, which was created from the drawing in the Codex Atlanticus by Leonardo da Vinci (sheet 846 v.) and realized between 1495 and 1496. The thousands of visitors experienced a real “flight” – both in its literal and metaphorical meaning – on Lombardy’s territory, thanks to the historic images and to the impressions projected on a multimedia floor.

Other occasions are going to be realized after the Expo and the previous projects. The Museum is constantly at work to promote and to valorize Leonardo da Vinci’s figure- after whom it was named – as well as his investigations of nature (from air to flight, from water to mechanics, from machinery through military engineering to architecture) which represent a contemporary model of extraordinary modernity, in spite of their 500 years.
