According to Leonardo well detailed drawing and notes, this device could be moved by a man or by water and provided ventilation during hot Milanese summers. As usual in many of his technical drawings, Leonardo marks with letters the various parts of the machine. The bellows barrel is divided into four sectors: the lower ones were filled by water. While the device rotated, water fell down pushing air out from the valves.
