"This is the way to make a screw"

The model is constituted of a wooden structure on which three long screws are mounted. The two at the sides are of iron while the one at the center, for which the threads are to be cut, is of wood. A cart runs along the three screws through the holes, guided by two bolts to the sides. Beside the central screw, a blade is secured in position, wedged into an oblique housing. The two screws to the sides are connected via two pinions and a toothed wheel at the center with a crank. The blade secured on the cart cuts threads on the screw, which is turned by the action of the crank. The same crank simultaneously causes the two lateral guide screws to turn, causing the cart to advance during the cutting. The pace of the thread cutting can be varied by changing the diameter of the pinions.
