The model represents a study for a paddle propulsion boat. The traction-wheels measure about one arm and a half (approximately 90 cm) and are operated by two men. In order to multiply the rowers’ force, he designs wheels having a diameter of one braccio (about 60 cm) with 16 teeth to engage a sprocket wheel of diameter one-quarter braccio (about 15 cm) and equipped with 12 teeth. According to Leonardo’s calculations, which neglect friction and mechanical or nautical difficulties, by causing the wheel of the first motion to make 50 turns per minute, a boat speed of 50 miles per hour would be obtained.
