Professionalisation for Learning in Science and Technology

The Project has been funded in the framework of the Lifelong Learning Programme. It aims to contribute substantially to the training of science centre and museum explainers. The Project partners will develop training courses and materials to help explainers in their everyday interaction with adult visitors, involving them actively in debates on science and governance.

Explainers (also called museum educators, facilitators, etc.), represent a very large group of actors in the science-society dialogue. Every day, many thousands of them are in direct contact with millions of visitors. Their work has a significant impact on the general movement for the popularisation of science and for the engagement of citizens in debates on science and governance. They are a crucial human interface between non-expert adults and science.

There is much evidence of best practice in European science centres and museums, although currently little work is being done to ensure this becomes widespread on a European level. There is also a growing awareness of the importance of the role of explainers, not just for supporting science innovation in schools, but for lifelong engagement in science and technology. However, that growing attention has not yet produced a European dimension of thought. There is no systematic collection of information about interaction methodologies and formats, numbers and training contents and methodologies.

PILOTS intends to follow two principal lines of action:
1. the collection of data on European practices concerning explainers;
2. the planning and testing of training modules to enhance the role of explainers in lifelong learning in science, with particular attention to the new needs of explainers in response to the requirements of adult learners: facilitating dialogue and discussion, tackling controversial and sensitive issues, taking into account gender differences and presenting current research. Four European courses on these topics will be organised during the two year project.
The project aims to contribute substantially to the updating of explainers modes of interactions with adults in informal learning settings at a European level.
