The
Museo Nacional
de Ciencias
Naturales
is a public
organisation
founded in 1771,
and the most
important research
centre in the
field of natural
sciences in
the country.
It carries out
multi-disciplinary
studies aiming
at the improvement
of knowledge
and conservation
of the natural
heritage. The
museum hosts
collections
of great storical
and scientific
value which
constist of
about 6 million
objects such
as insects,
molluscs, fish,
amfibians, rettils,
mammals, fossils,
minerals and
rocks.
The
museum has set
the following
objectives
as its principal
lines of action:
i) to contribute
to the improvement
of awareness
of the diversity
existing in
the natural
world;
ii) to encourage
the diffusion
of scientific
activity, the
display of collections
and the understanding
of the value
of the natural
heritage; iii)
to improve the
public’s
perception of
the importance
of science and
its understanding
of the field;
iv) contribute
to the raising
of sensibility
about the protection
of natural heritage;
and
v) promote learning
of the natural
sciences for
people of all
ages and levels
of sophistication.
